LDAO – Some Assembly Required Book 2: Skills For Success (SOAR)
LDAO – Some Assembly Required Book 3: Making Choices (SOAR)
LDAO – Some Assembly Required Facilitator’s Guide (SOAR)

The series is intended to be read and discussed in class. Not everyone in the room needs to have a learning disability for this to be interesting and useful: a lot of the information presented is interesting in general, all of the skills are usable by anybody.

The classroom discussion that is solicited by SOAR is its strength. Teachers will develop an understanding of how students are progressing by their understanding and willingness to discuss their learning disabilities, learning styles and compensatory strategies.

SOAR is meant to be read in chunks, preferably with other people so students can discuss what they have read. But if the student feels like reading it all at once, they can. They can also flip around in the book, reading the parts they like best first.

Some sections have questions in them, and some are just to read and think about, or discuss.

Book One: L’s and D’s looks at how people learn, and how students choose their academic focuses through their learning styles, interests, and abilities. It explains how a learning disability interferes with learning, and what can be done to help. It also presents a model for considering approaches to problems.

Book Two: Skills for Success breaks down school tasks into three areas (daily work, studying and tests, and projects and assignments) and explains how students can approach each area. Students are asked to complete a short presentation project as practice.

Book Three: Making Choices for the Future prepares students for the changes and choices that will come in high school. It offers strategies for staying organized and on top of schoolwork, and it discusses Individual Education Plans and accommodations. Different career paths are also discussed, and a list of resources gives students, caregivers, and teachers a guide for further exploration of these issues.

The SOAR Facilitator’s Guide gives a through overview of the three books, suggestions for presentation and conversation moderation, as well as an informative section on The Emotional Classroom and Techniques That Work.
