Supporting Learners to Read: Making Sense of How Reading Works

This course is designed for support staff, tutors, parents, caregivers, and others who support learners as they develop reading skills. It builds knowledge and confidence by explaining how reading develops, why some learners experience difficulty, and how evidence-informed instruction and support can make a meaningful difference.

Throughout the course, participants will explore the key components of skilled reading, including word recognition, language comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, morphology, orthography, and reading comprehension. The course emphasizes practical, explicit, and responsive approaches that can be used across school, home, tutoring, and community settings.

Participants will also engage with reflection prompts, examples, strategies, and resources that support application of learning and encourage strengths-based, learner-centred support.

Core content requires approximately 8 to 10 hours to complete, with additional time for reflection and application.

Participants have six months of access from the date of enrollment. Extensions may be granted upon request.
